The goal of the internship is to expose students who have not had any risk management and insurance coursework or experience to the wholesale, specialty and surplus lines segment of the property and casualty insurance industry, a unique segment that focuses on unusual, high risk insurance needs such as cyber security, celebrities and athletes, construction, transportation and shipping, natural disasters, cannabis, and many more. Participants will learn about the market with the goal of gaining basic knowledge about how the business works and the various roles engaged in the insurance distribution process. Interns will be assigned a host focused more on the brokerage side of the business or the underwriting side for the nine-week program.

Within their assigned business units, interns will work on assignments focused on brokerage or underwriting and also learn about other possible areas of the business such as: claims, product research, marketing and/or finance. In order to gain a broadened perspective of the business, interns will also have the opportunity to meet with individuals who work in the other various functions within the group.
Interns will participate in activities with other interns, employees and leaders throughout the organization.

Interns will be selected and assigned a host in cities around the country. Examples of previous assignments include New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Phoenix, Dallas and more. After interns are selected, they will complete a survey indicating their preferences of areas and will be matched with employers as closely as possible to these interests.
