The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time tenure-eligible position in actuarial science at the rank of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is fall 2019. The actuarial science program at Arizona State began admitting students into its Bachelor of Science degree program in fall 2014 and has an enrollment of 115 undergraduate students. The School also has a new master’s program in place (as of fall 2018) and is in the process of admitting new students. Our actuary program was recognized in June with The Casualty Actuarial Society’s University Award. It also has an active chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma. The School plans to significantly increase both the size and stature of the actuarial program in the next few years.
The essential duties of the position will be to conduct research on theory, methodology, or applications in the areas relevant to actuarial science, mathematical finance, and/or risk analysis. Publications are expected in appropriate high-quality journals. In addition, high quality teaching is expected in classes relevant to our undergraduate and masters actuarial programs along with student mentoring and appropriate professional service.
Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in the mathematical or statistical sciences or a related field with a research emphasis in actuarial science, mathematical finance, risk analysis or a closely related area by August 10, 2019. Candidates also must have demonstrated potential for excellence in research and teaching.
The desired qualifications include a documented record of published research, strong potential for obtaining grants from actuarial societies and/or industry, a strong record of instruction and student mentoring, and demonstrated success working with diverse student and/or faculty populations. Desired qualifications also include significant progress toward being credentialed (at the associateship or fellowship level) with either the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) or a society mutually recognized by the SOA or CAS.
The actuarial science program resides within the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, which currently has 57 full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members and approximately 55 lecturers, senior lecturers, and principal lecturers. In addition to the degree programs in actuarial science, the School offers bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. programs in applied mathematics, mathematics, mathematics education and statistics with over 180 enrolled graduate students. The School is also leading the development of an interdisciplinary B.S. degree program in data science, which will include courses in computational mathematics and statistics. Excellent computing resources are available in the School that include individual faculty workstations as well as access to the University's central computing facilities and the High Performance Computing Initiative. The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences has a strongly interdisciplinary research and instruction profile that includes numerous collaborations inside and outside the university, in areas such as the social sciences, education, physical sciences, engineering, biological sciences, medicine, and environmental sciences.
