The Underwriting Operations Internship program is a unique opportunity to gain valuable knowledge, skills, and work experience in the field of catastrophe underwriting. With your education in underwriting and insurance principles, you will be able to make a significant contribution by assuming ownership of a project that serves a specific business need. In the process, you will learn about and experience underwriting and underwriting operations as a colleague rather than an observer. After an immersion training experience designed to expose you to the most important aspects of our business, you will work directly with a project sponsor and your supervisor on your project and related assignments.

Initial training consists of instructor-led training with other interns and in some cases with other ICAT employees, shadowing in various departments, and online coursework in topics including insurance markets, commercial property insurance, catastrophe insurance products and forms overview (earthquake, wind, hurricane, flood, all other peril), policy lifecycle, risk modeling, systems, and overview of ICAT’s business units including Middle Market and ICAT Online.
Projects assigned will focus on topics related to business processes such as inspections, losses, cost of doing business, and producer training needs.
Interns will work with the project sponsor to determine project scope, resources, and develop timelines for project milestones.
Interns will deliver a final presentation on the project, findings, and recommendations at the conclusion of the internship.
Attendance at account review meetings and other meetings relevant to individual projects will further enhance learning opportunities.
Additional underwriting tasks and assignments will be tailored to the project and career interests of the intern, schedule permitting.
Maintain knowledge of and support ICAT’s company values and strategic plan.
Sit or stand and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
Stoop, kneel, bend at the waist and reach.
Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday with some evening, weekend and holiday hours.
Ability to work in a very fast-paced environment with multiple, often times competing, priorities.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrates initiative and strong work ethic, is resourceful and self-motivated.
In process of Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management & Insurance or related field and has demonstrated strong academic performance.
